Debit Cards Good for Diesel Fuel Pump Skimmers

Are you one to NOT carry around cash and use your debit card for everything, even diesel fuel? I am. It’s easy to just have a debt card right? It’s like having cash but in plastic. And with all of the scams out there with the gas pumps with your credit cards, why wouldn’t you want to use your debit card?

Because at least with a debit card you have a pin number right to help keep it secure? With all of the scams out there with credit cards you think you would be better using your debit card, right? Well you may want to rethink this. Diesel fuel skimmers are getting craftier.

The new thing that I just read that happened in Oklahoma City at a local Wal-Mart Murphy station is that these individuals are now placing a card skimmer and a fake PIN pad over the fuel card reader. This is designed to capture PINs from customers who paid at a pump with a debit card. Scary right? At least a fleet fuel cards you have security and it’s a credit limit. Your debit card is your account with your information! Scary if you ask me.

Seems that these individuals would be in a local hotel while their skimming devices were in pace for one to two months. With this data they would create counterfeit cards and visit multiple ATMs throughout the area and withdrawing large amounts of cash.

In addition to this skimmer scammers are turning to Bluetooth-enabled devices that connect directly to the diesel fuel pump’s power source. This allows skimmers to retrieve stolen data wirelessly while waiting in their car at a gas pump or diesel fuel island.

With all of this said and learning about the new things skimmers can think of, I would rather use a fuel card then my own account. At least with a fleet fuel cards you can have them audit your transactions with their fraud department.

There they would alert you of any miscellaneous charges. As like the Sokolis does for their clients when they do a fuel audit and review transactions for their clients. Do you have this?
