The national average for diesel fuel prices climbed for the seventh consecutive week, surpassing the $4 mark for the first time since May 14. Diesel fuel price climbed 6.1 cents to $4.026 a gallon during the week ended Monday, Aug. 20, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration.
During 12 straight weekly declines from April 16 through July 2, the price of diesel fuel had dropped 49.9 cents a gallon; since that time, the price has climbed 37.8 cents. This week’s price is 21.6 cents above the same week last year. A lot of people feel the price of diesel fuel will stay here or go down slightly over the next month. After that buckle up and hold on as predictions of $4.25 to $4.50 a gallon for diesel fuel prices as a national average are out there. Certainly higher diesel fuel prices in other regions of the country.
Average retail prices rose in all regions, led by an 10.6-cent increase to $4.184 on the West Coast, not including California. The most expensive diesel fuel on average was $4.313 a gallon in California, where prices rose 9.8 cents. The least expensive diesel on average was $3.911 a gallon on the Gulf Coast, where prices climbed 5.5 cents.
