Fleet Fueling Analysis…Gas Prices & Diesel Fuel Prices Going Up?

The summer of 2008 will be most remembered not for the weather, but for the ridiculous diesel fuel prices and gas price. Gas at the pump reached $4 a gallon, the highest price ever seen by the U.S and diesel fuel prices were over $5.00 in some areas. The result of a surge in crude oil prices, and weakness in the dollar, set crude oil at a record of $148.54 a barrel at the time; a 40% increase. Prices of fueling finally fell at the end of the summer giving us all some fuel savings and remained relatively steady at just below $3 a gallon, but will it get as high as the summer of ’08 again anytime soon?

In the spring of 2010 diesel fuel prices and gas prices were predicted to go up over the summer season but only by a small margin. Speculation of rising crude oil prices and the troubled economy fueled concern, but the main reason for the rising fleet fueling cost resulted from the summer gas mandates by the EPA. Towards Labor Day, gas prices began to fall again not just because of the end of summer mandates, but also because of a lower demand for fuel resulting from the recession, and because of higher supply from the fuel companies stockpiling over the summer months.

As we enter the fall season prices have fallen slightly two weeks in a row. As China experiences political pressure regarding their currency fluctuations, while also increasing interest rates, the dollar went soaring thus easing pressure on diesel fuel prices. With this fuel analysis it seems we have good news for not only normal gas consumers and fleet companies using diesel fuel, but also for fleets and fleet managers. With our fuel analysis we believe that fuel savings will continue to slightly drop until at least the holiday season.
