Fuel Theft Not Happening to You? Better Think Again.

I stopped by one of my favorite regional convenience stores the other day.

I parked my car, used my fuel card and filled up my car with a full tank of gas. Parked next to me was a company truck next to the diesel fuel islands.

I went into the store and ordered a sandwich. While I was paying, the truck driver of the company truck asked for $75 on pump 3 and a receipt. I received my sandwich and walked back out to the fueling island where I left my car parked.

Only because I have seen this before and had a hunch, I had to see how much diesel fuel this truck was taking. The driver stopped the diesel fuel pump at $65. My curiosity was aware ( remember fuel management is my job) so I walked back into the c-store, not for another sandwich, but I wanted to see what this truck driver said to the clerk.

“Pump 3 only took $65” the clerk said, and handed the truck driver back (yes you got it) $10.

Did the driver bring that back to his supervisor or owner? I don’t know, so I am not going to say guilty but I am going to say very suspicious.

Without a fleet fuel card, this exposes the company to unnecessary fuel costs. Not only does your company need a fuel card, it needs someone to review and do fuel audits on all of that information.

As diesel fuel prices get higher and fuel savings get harder, the potential for fuel theft will increase. Don’t take your fueling program for granted. Need help?
